Understanding Your Body’s Response to Hormone Pellet Therapy

Doctor talking with patient about body's response to hormone pellet therapy

Hormone pellet therapy in some form has been around for quite a while, since the 1930’s in fact. However, it has recently become somewhat of a favorite of ours here at Blue Sky MD for several reasons.

Firstly, the pellets we use here at Blue Sky MD are made from bio-identical plant hormones, which means the hormones we us are not synthetic like a lot of other modalities, and the human body responds well to it.

Secondly, hormone pellet therapy is a much more convenient delivery system than patches, creams, or injections, for example. The pellets are inserted under the skin once every 3-6 months, meaning there’s no daily upkeep and no chance of accidentally forgetting a dose. Besides, who like sticking themselves with needles every week, or applying a greasy cream every day?

Lastly, and most importantly, hormone pellets provide consistent, controlled dosages of hormones meaning the body has a steady supply of the hormone and there’s no chance of pesky fluctuations that can cause side effects.

But before we get ahead of ourselves, let’s take a step back and talk more about what hormone pellet therapy is, and what it isn’t.

What is Hormone Pellet Therapy?

Hormone Pellet Therapy is a form of hormone replacement therapy (aka HRT) that involves inserting small, bioidentical hormone pellets under the skin. These pellets are typically made from plant-derived hormones like testosterone and estrogen. Once inserted, these pellets slowly release their hormones into the body over a period of several months.

This slow and steady release of hormones acts in the same way that our body naturally releases hormones, making it easy for the body to handle and utilize the treatment. Over time, this additional supply of hormones will help to balance and optimize hormone levels.

How Do Our Bodies React to Hormone Pellet Therapy?

Everyone is different, and each patient we see requires a different dosage or hormone treatment. That being said, there is a common theme with our patients when they begin hormone pellet therapy.

Phase 1: Initial Adjustment Period

After we insert the hormone pellets, your body will naturally go through an adjustment period as the new hormones circulate through the body. There may be some swelling and discomfort at the site of insertion, but this is generally mild and goes away within a day or two. During the first week or so after starting treatment, your body will begin to absorb and regulate the hormone treatment.

Phase 2: Reaching Hormone Equilibrium

As your body adjusts to the new hormones, you may notice some changes in mood or energy levels. This is a perfectly normal part of the process as your body finds equilibrium with the new hormones in your system. For example, if you’ve been suffering from low testosterone for a while, you might feel more energy and clarity than you’ve felt in some time. At this point in the process, it’s important to communicate with your Blue Sky MD hormone expert to share any concerns or side effects—they can help you make adjustments if needed.

Phase 3: Long-Term Benefits

After your hormones have been fully optimized, you’ll experience the many benefits of hormone pellet therapy. Depending on the type of hormone being treated, these can include:

  • increased energy levels
  • improved mood
  • better sleep quality
  • boosted libido
  • reduced hot flashes
  • increased muscle mass & strength
  • weight loss

Hormone Pellet Therapy: Everyone is Different!

The most important thing to remember is that everyone is different and can have different responses to hormone pellet therapy. What is considered a “normal” hormone range for one person can be different for another. At any point during your hormone pellet treatments you can ask your provider to adjust the dosage if you’re experiencing unwanted side effects.

Regular monitoring is an important aspect of pellet therapy—there’s no “setting and forgetting”. You will meet at regular intervals with your provider to go over any concerns or negative symptoms to ensure your hormone pellet therapy is working the way it should and enhancing your life.

What does hormone pellet therapy do?

Hormone pellet therapy helps balance hormone levels in patients by means of inserting a pellet underneath the skin, usually sourced from plant hormones. This can help reduce symptoms of menopause in women, and symptoms of low testosterone in men.

How painful is hormone pellet insertion?

The insertion of hormone pellets is relatively quick and painless and quite simple. The pellets are about the size of a grain of rice, and most people only experience mild discomfort during the insertion process.

Will I lose weight on hormone pellets?

Most patients who undergo hormone pellet therapy experience an increase in lean muscle mass, energy levels, and increased metabolism. Consequently, most patients experience weight loss as well by virtue of gaining more lean muscle mass and energy if they also practice a balanced and healthy lifestyle.

Where are hormone pellets inserted?

Hormone pellets are typically inserted in the fatty tissue on the patient’s hip, alternating sides between every subsequent injection.
