Testosterone plays a vital role in men’s health, affecting energy levels, muscle mass, mood, and overall well-being. When testosterone levels drop too low—a condition known as hypogonadism—men can experience fatigue, weight gain, low libido, and even an increased risk of serious health issues.
Hormone therapy for men can help treat low testosterone and reduce symptoms—this is often referred to as testosterone replacement therapy, as testosterone is the main hormone being replenished or balanced—however, other important hormones such as estrogen also usually need to be balanced as well.
Testosterone therapy, or TRT, has recently gained significant popularity, thanks in part to the large amount of data to support its efficacy and safety. A recent study looked at whether Testosterone Replacement Therapy could not only improve symptoms but also reduce the risk of a list of major health problems.
What the Study Found
Researchers analyzed data from over 133,000 men between the ages of 40 and 80 who had been diagnosed with low testosterone. They compared those who received TRT with those who did not. Over a period of three years, the study found that men who received TRT had:
- Lower risk of death (3.1% vs. 3.6%)
- Lower risk of atrial fibrillation (AF), a type of irregular heartbeat (3.6% vs. 4.0%)
- Fewer strokes (1.6% vs. 1.8%)
- Lower risk of prostate cancer (1.9% vs. 2.9%)
These findings suggest that TRT may do more than just help with energy and libido—it could also support heart health and longevity.
What This Means for You
If you have symptoms of low testosterone, it’s important to get tested and talk with your doctor about whether TRT might be a good option for you. While the study’s results are promising, each person’s health situation is unique, and TRT isn’t for everyone. A thorough evaluation can help determine whether it’s a safe and beneficial choice in your case.
