Setbacks are a natural part of the weight loss process. In fact, we like to embrace these “slip-ups” as part of a healthy weight loss journey. Here’s why.
Life happens. No matter how diligent you are with your weight loss regimen, you’re more than likely going to have an off day where you have a few extra treats, overindulge, or simply just can’t fit exercise into your busy schedule.
Take responsibility and move forward.
Building accountability for yourself is key to changing behavior. Denial tends to create cognitive dissonance that can cause unnecessary psychological stress.
However, you don’t need to beat yourself up about a small misstep—making mistakes is a part of life and a key mechanism of the learning process. Once you admit that you could have done something differently, then you can evaluate what led to overeating, for example, and move forward.
Examine your weight loss tactics.
A slip-up can be a sign that something isn’t right. This may be a good opportunity to evaluate your current diet or exercise and see what’s working and what isn’t.
Are you surrounding yourself with environmental triggers? Did you forget to have a healthy snack before heading to the birthday party? Is your exercise routine too unrealistic for your work schedule? Are you getting burnt out?
Once you identify the root cause of the derailment then you know where you can focus on and improve.
Don’t restrict or try to overcorrect.
Restricting begins a yo-yo effect that can derail your sense of wellbeing and overall progress. If you went a little overboard with dessert the night before, it’s not wise to skip a meal or two the next day to make up for it.
The key to progress in any endeavor is sustainability and consistency. If it’s too extreme and restrictive then it’s not going to stick for the long term.
Try celebrating how far you’ve come
A slip-up might seem like a defeat, but in reality it often simply shows us how much progress we’ve made.
Most importantly, remember that setbacks are not a reflection of you as a person. They’re part of the process and a great opportunity to optimize your current plan.
